changing neut's from veg to flower

i am using a ebb & flow with a 5 gal. reservoir & have been vegging for almost 3 week's & ready to switch & am not sure if i should empty the res. of the remaining nutrient formula(veg) & refill with the flowering formula or slowly just add flowering formula with the veg formula as the plant's continue too feed???
want to avoid nutrient lock up & or burning my girl's
using

I do not see a problem in changing straight over to your flowering ferts.

you mean empty the reservoir?? & add what i take out.
or just start to add the flowering formula

I would empty your resevoir and start with flowering stage neuts. You really should be emptying your resevoir atleast every couple weeks and replacing with new neuts.

i was going over this issue with a friend & he believer's that allowing the plant's to drink down a gallon & when replenishing the gallon use the flowering formula & do a slower transition

There is no reason not to change immediately. Most, if not all hydro growers I know, change straight over. I would be disinclined to follow your friend's advice. It is not sound advice IMHO.

when i empty the res & the root's are no longer in the water(neuts)
will the exposure harm them?
there about 3 1/2/ week old clone's with established root's
