It's not the self-serve car wash, diesel fuel tanks or farmer's market proposal that have neighbors concerned about renovation plans for a property in unincorporated Monrovia.
The property owner, developer Leon San Blas, also plans to turn one of the buildings into a medical marijuana dispensary, according to the Pasadena Star-News. He told the newspaper that things didn't go well when he presented plans at a Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte (MAD) Town Council meeting.
"They look at me as a drug lord," Blas told the Star-News.
Blas, who is paralyzed from the waist down, said he just wants to help patients who use marijuana as medince.
About 100 people attended the meeting regarding the property at Live Oak and Lynd avenues. Daryl Dittebrand lives across the street.
"Everyone is up in arms," he told the Star-News. "People were getting loud, people were on their feet, people were shaking their fists."
Blas' proposal comes as LA County Supervisor Mike Antonovich announced plans for an ordinance that would ban dispensaries in unincorporated areas. Monrovia has already imposed a ban on medical marijuana clinics, but Blas' property is in an unicorporated area.
Owners needs to obtain a conditional use permit to open a dispensary in an unincorporated area of LA County.
Earlier this month, the city of LA ordered more than 400 dispensaries to close in accordance with the city's new medical marijuana ordinance. Eventually, the city hopes to whittle the number of pot shops down to 70 and to limit outlets to industrial areas.
Dispensaries that opened before the city declared a moratorium on Nov. 13, 2007, will be allowed to stay open but, within six months, they will have to comply with the ordinance, which has a strict zoning component.
