Austrailia - A Goomboorian man caught with 96 cannabis plants at his home said he needed the drug to self-medicate.
Geoffrey Robert Martin, 47, pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Neil Lavaring on Monday.
He faced charges of producing drugs, possessing drugs and utensils and possessing property suspected of being used in connection with committing a drug offence.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Lisa Manns said police searched Martin's home at Cunningham Road and he took them to three plots where the plants, ranging in height from 30cm to one metre, were growing.
He told police the plants were for personal use only.
They also found a plastic water pipe, grinder and scissors as well as a small amount of dried cannabis in a bowl.
Solicitor Tony Doolan told Gympie Magistrates Court that Martin, who cares for his father, was given the seeds at a party and there was no sophistication about the way he grew the plants.
He said his client had been fully co-operative with police and only smoked the drug because he couldn't sleep.
His client had been on blood pressure tablets for six years and had then developed trouble sleeping, he said.
He had tried various remedies from health food shops but the only thing that worked was the cannabis.
He said Martin had now stopped smoking the drug, but was instead drinking to help induce sleep. Martin was fined $1500 and had no conviction recorded.
