The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC) will welcome Dr. Barry Kurtzer to discuss the use of medical marijuana during its May 3 event in Wetaskiwin, Alta.
Titled 'Medical Marijuana and the Workplace,' the event is intended to address what is expected to be an increase in the use of medical marijuana in the near future, and how that will impact those in the workplace.
The PMTC said that with the transportation industry making up around 5% of the country's workforce, the use of medical cannabis is expected to 'explode' due to recent federal government regulatory changes, with an estimated 22,000 commercial vehicle operators in Canada with the option of being medically authorized to use marijuana by 2024.
The PMTC feels this would have serious implications for safety in the industry, and plan to address several issues during the Wetaskiwin event, including understanding what medical marijuana is, the regulations around the substance, how they impact health-car professionals and employers and identifying solutions for determining whether a worker is medically qualified and fit to perform safety-sensitive work.
"The PMTC continues to expand its educational and networking offerings," said Mike Millian, PMTC president. "This seminar was previously held in Nova Scotia and Ontario, and we want to ensure the valuable information that is presented at this seminar is made available to our members in as many regions of this great country as possible. Non-members are encouraged to register as well — this information will be valuable to anyone in the transportation industry."
Dr. Kurtzer has more than 30 years of experience as a physician providing occupational health programs to employers and is recognized as one of Canada's leading medical experts on the impact of substance use on workplace safety.
The event runs from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and costs $25 for PMTC and DriverCheck members; $100 for non-members. The location will be disclosed upon registration. Contact Vanessa Cox at info@pmtc.ca or call 905-827-0587 to enroll.
