Police seized approximately $2.3 million worth of marijuana plants Friday after authorities uncovered what they called a sophisticated growing operation inside a Santa Ana warehouse.
Five men bolted from the back alley of the industrial building Friday morning after a fire alarm triggered the arrival of Orange County Fire Authority firefighters, who found upward of 1,600 marijuana plants growing inside the unlocked building, police said.
OCFA responded around 7 a.m. to an activated fire alarm inside a warehouse in the 1100 block of East 17th Street.
"They found no fire but did find 1,600 marijuana plants in various stages of growth," Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
After acquiring a search warrant around 11:45 a.m. Friday, Santa Ana police began combing the building, which is hidden from street traffic and located in a row of warehouses that is separated by a residential neighborhood and an alleyway.
Officials found a "sophisticated marijuana cultivation operation," including 1,636 pot plants, sorted by growth stages, in separate rooms inside the building and intricate irrigation and lighting systems.
City code enforcement officials also went to the warehouse, noting several unpermitted construction projects inside.
"They were developing this place," Bertagna said. "There was a lot of construction they were doing."
