Trustees of the California Medial Association (CMA) adopted a news stance at its annual meeting Friday in Anaheim, calling for the legalization of marijuana, even as the group maintains that the "drug" has little proven health benefits.
According to California doctors, in regards to the groups new policy, the medical professionals say they are increasingly frustrated by the state's medical marijuana law, which does allow patient use with a doctor's recommendation. They say that physicians are put in the uncomfortable position of deciding whether or not to recommend a drug that is illegal under federal law.
The doctors say that the question of whether cannabis is useful or not can only be answered once it is legalized and more research is done.
The federal government considers cannabis a drug with no medical use. The CMA wants the White House to reclassify marijuana to help promote further research on its medical potential and benefits.
The CMA's decision has sparked outrage and heated responses from some in law enforcement. But the American public may be changing its tune on marijuana. According to a Gallop Poll released Monday, 50 percent of American adults think marijuana should be legalized, up from 46 percent a year ago.
