Drug agents in San Joaquin County discovered two marijuana grow houses, next door to each other, on Tuesday morning.
Agents from the regional drug task force were alerted to the first house because of its extremely high electricity usage. While the home on Universal Drive in Stockton's Weston Ranch neighborhood was empty, agents did find about 250 plants.
A short time later, they realized the home next door was also using unusually high amounts of electricity. After obtaining a search warrant, agents discovered approximately 1,000 plants being grown or processed in that home.
"It's easy money," county prosecutor Todd Turner said in regard to the high number of pot houses being discovered around Stockton.
"Stockton has big houses in commuter neighborhoods. Most of the people doing the grow are from the Bay Area. We did 66 grows last year with the task force. We're on pace to do that again this year," Turner said.
Turner said much of the marijuana being grown in pot houses is actually shipped back East, where supply is low and prices are high.
"The California market is flooded. They can get five times the money back East for this," Turner said.
