The Vallejo City Council has approved an ordinance to allow four medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in the city.
Under the plan, the operations would be under strict guidelines to "ensure compatibility with adjacent land uses and avoid over-concentration of the dispensaries," according to city officials.
The ordinance establishes four geographical quadrants in the city, with Interstate 80 dividing the city north to south and Tennessee Street, east to west.
Operators who want to open a MMD are required to submit applications which would then be reviewed by the chief of police. Applicants are required to submit a criminal history.
The dispensaries will be chosen by criteria established by the city council, and extra points will be awarded for perspective operations which are distant from schools, are merging dispensaries together, have a history of paying taxes, and complied with the City's request for voluntary closure by April 21, 2015, according to the city.
Under the ordinance the selected MMDs can only operate from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and must be located at least 600 feet from schools, child-care centers, public parks, libraries, youth centers, substance abuse recovery center, or any other medical marijuana dispensary.
City officials say the permits are expected to be issued in August and that the four selected dispensaries would open during the following three months.
