With views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco's Marina district is among the most beautiful neighborhoods in the world, and now boasts another attraction: a luxe medical cannabis dispensary.
The Apothecarium on Lombard, which opens at noon on July 26, is no Summer of Love head shop. Its marble counters, velvet chairs, crystal chandelier and slate-colored walls lend a modern, yet Victorian vibe. The six-figure interiors by Urban Chalet with Vincent Gonzaga as project manager are also wheelchair-friendly.
It's the third in the Apothecarium group, after its first in the Castro (recently named by Architectural Digest as the best-designed dispensary in the U.S.) and a second in Las Vegas. Housed in a former Thai restaurant, the dispensary was three years in the making, due in large part to neighborhood opposition to a shop selling medical cannabis and cannabis-infused edibles.
"We asked our design team to create an environment that would put first-time cannabis patients at ease as soon as they come into the building," said Ryan Hudson, a company co-founder and executive director, in a statement. First visits often take an hour for education about dosage and types of products to ingest.
Despite the legalization of recreational use by the passage of Prop. 64, the Apothecarium is not a tourist destination just yet. Medical recommendations are required for entry. But as the first dispensary north of Post Street and south of the city of Fairfax, its location just might make it popular in another way: as Marin County's best new medical cannabis dispensary – depending on traffic, of course.
