On Thursday, July 7, the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with other county departments, including the Siskiyou County Planning Department, began enforcement of the county's two medical marijuana ordinance amendments (Siskiyou County Ordinances 15-18 and 15-19), after the June 8 election was validated during the scheduled board of supervisors meeting on July 5. The biggest change to impact the marijuana ordinance is the ban on outdoor grows on private property sites. As detailed in the amendments, only 12 plants are allowed to be grown in a compliant indoor structure or greenhouse in county areas. Additionally, the ordinance amendments provide more efficient enforcement protocols to deal with non compliant grows. In the first week of the ordinance enforcement effort, the newly-formed Siskiyou Interagency Marijuana Investigation Team issued 21 notices to violators of the ordinance illegally growing marijuana in the areas of Klamath River Country Estates, Mt. Shasta Vista, Mt. Shasta Forest and Pleasant Valley (Butte Valley), and enforcement actions have been initiated in Scott Valley and other south county locations.SIMIT is currently made up of members of the SCSO. This week, an investigator from the Siskiyou County District Attorney's Office will be assigned to the team. During the first week, 497 illegal marijuana plants were eradicated from the Mt. Shasta Forest area outside McCloud. Additional notices are being prepared and SIMIT is working on several search warrants pursuant to observed criminal violations of law. SCSO participates in the North State Marijuana Investigation Team and its members, along with the United States Forest Service, eradicated 6,000 marijuana plants and arrested a suspected cartel member in the Methodist Creek area of unincorporated Siskiyou County on USFS property, on Friday, July 15.
According to Sheriff Jon Lopey, "The achievements of SIMIT during the first week of the enforcement effort were favorable and we are working well with other county departments and allied agencies to maximize our illegal marijuana enforcement efforts and to achieve voluntary compliance with the law. SIMIT's objective is to curtail the numerous illegal marijuana grow sites on private property in various parts of unincorporated Siskiyou County. We are not targeting compliant, legitimate medical marijuana users who are in possession of an amount of marijuana consistent with their prescribed medical needs. NSMIT, a regional task force, also had a productive week and they are working on some additional public land illegal grow sites that are known to exist in the county. We are still receiving numerous complaints from our citizens and their concerns are a major priority for us and we ask all citizens to report suspected ordinance or law violations."
