"Integration of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries into Our Community" is the topic of a special Ramona Community Planning Group meeting that will be held Wednesday evening, Sept. 28.
The meeting, open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in Ramona Library Community Room, 1275 Main St.
The discussion will begin with introductions by planning group chair and meeting moderator Jim Piva.
Owners of medical marijuana facilities will then be given 15 minutes to talk about dispensaries and regulations they must follow, according to Piva.
San Diego County Sheriff's Department Detective Mike Helms will address crime, inspections and compliance and California Highway Patrol Sergeant Amado Macias will talk about new ways to identify driving under the influence, Piva said. Each will be given five minutes to speak.
Joe Farace from San Diego County Planning and Development Services is allotted 15 minutes and is scheduled to talk about new rules the county is considering to adopt regarding medical marijuana facilities, and the effects Proposition 64 - legalizing recreational marijuana - could have on dispensaries if approved by voters in November.
Question and answer sessions will wrap up the discussion.
Planners are then scheduled to discuss reconsideration of their motion from their Sept. 1 meeting to send a letter to the county Board of Supervisors supporting the following amendments to the county's Medical Marijuana Collectives Facility Ordinance: 1) Require separation buffer from residential use rather than residential zone; 2) Increase sensitive land use buffer from 1,000 feet to one mile; 3) Requirement for a major use permit to be obtained prior to siting a medical marijuana collective facility; 4) Limit the number of medical marijuana collective facilities per supervisorial district; and 5) Strongly support an amortization clause for current and future facilities. The Sept. 1 motion passed 8-3 with four members absent.
Should the motion for reconsideration pass, the item will be placed on the agenda for the planning group's Oct. 6 meeting that will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ramona Library Community Room.
Ramona currently has one dispensary, ShowGrow at 736 Montecito Way, which was operating before the county's moratorium on medical marijuana collectives was adopted in March. Applicants for two other dispensaries, 1210 Olive St. and 618 Pine St., are allowed to proceed so they can obtain their operating certificates because they had approved building permits before the moratorium and the county determined they had already made substantial investments. In addition, a group has been considering 2338 Montecito Road for a medical marijuana cultivation operation.
