Grover Beach selected its top two applicants to open medical marijuana dispensaries in the city Monday night.
The two are The Monarch Group and Natural Healing Center.
City Manager Matt Bronson said The Monarch was chosen because of its "strong location" off Grand Avenue, and the proposed location in an already vacant building.
Natural Healing Center was chosen because of the "significant investment into the city's industrial area" that the group proposed. Bronson said Natural Healing Center plans to invest approximately $20 million into the area and its business.
The City Council also selected two alternate applicants that could fill in if something happens during permitting of the top two choices. Those are Milkman and 805 Beach Breaks.
Here's a quick look at the two applications:
The Monarch Group
Location: 239 South 3rd St.
Applicant: The Monarch Group, consisting of principals Steven Weisman, Matthew Bashwiner, Corey Glazer, Patrick Shannon, Antolin Cardenas and Sunni Vogel Mullinax.
Background: Principals of the Monarch Group own and operate six dispensaries, multiple cultivation sites and manufacturing and processing facilities in Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Colorado and California, according to the application.
About the business: According to the application, the company was selected because it wouldn't displace any existing businesses or jobs. The company promises to conduct neighborhood outreach to residents and businesses, hold community feedback forums and twice-daily trash pickup in an effort to be a "conscientious neighbor."
Natural Healing Center
Location: 998 Huston St.
Applicant: Natural Healing Center, with executive team Helios Dayspring and David Separzadeh.
Background: According to its application, the company's team of business leaders and medical cannabis entrepreneurs have more than 30 years of combined expertise in cannabis agriculture, economic development, government and political affairs and real estate development.
About the business: The company will offer a range of edible medical cannabis products, with a special focus on edibles that appeal to seniors. It will also feature a member services department responsible for educating and informing patients about the dispensary and issues impacting medical marijuana patients.
