The Calabasas City Council voted to amend its medical marijuana law and allow qualified patients with a prescription to cultivate limited amounts of cannabis.

In January, the city passed regulations prohibiting the cultivation and delivery of marijuana ahead of a deadline imposed by the state that establishes a licensing and regulatory framework for the cultivation, manufacture, transportation, storage, distribution and sale of medical marijuana.

Under the state law, cities that did not have a local ordinance regulating the cultivation and sale of medical marijuana would be permitted and regulated by the state.

During the meeting in January, some officials in Calabasas were concerned that the new rules banning cultivation for personal use were too restrictive for patients who have a legitimate need for medical cannabis.

With the revision, residents who have a prescription for cannabis, along with their primary caregivers, will once again be allowed to grow medical pot, but with strict guidelines.

The cannabis can only be grown in a small nonliving area of a home or garage. The cultivation area must be indoors and out of sight of the public, and it cannot use lighting that exceeds 1,200 watts. Growers are not allowed to use electric generators or gas products.
