Two Kern County cities took on marijuana regulation Tuesday night, each with a different outcome.
Arvin could soon see new revenue next year after approving the cultivation of marijuana within city limits. Arvin City Council voted Tuesday night to pass the ordinance unanimously.
The ordinance allows for indoor cultivation of recreational and medical marijuana. However, dispensaries and the sale of cannabis will remain banned in the city. The ordinance allows 1,350,000 square feet of indoor commercial cultivation, and growers can only sell their product to distributors.
The vote comes as Arvin works to recover from a $1.8 million budget deficit. Opponents argued the move was in the interest of revenue rather than family values. Proponents argued for the medical benefits of marijuana and its legality statewide.
Now that the ordinance has been passed, Arvin will have the option to amend it moving forward.
Also on Tuesday but on the other side of town, Taft City Council banned commercial marijuana. The council plans to bring the item back up in January for discussion again.
Wasco postponed their decision to next month, due to a majority of council members being absent from the meeting.
