By unanimous vote, the Anderson City Council extended their existing moratorium on the business of non-medical marijuana business within city limits.
Citing the need to better understand the legal ramifications of California municipalities allowing legal recreational marijuana, the council delayed the decision on how to handle the voter-approved legalization of recreational marijuana in Anderson.
Stan Neutze, a council member opposed to marijuana sales in Anderson, said recreational marijuana is a health safety concern, particularly for young people.
Vice-Mayor Norma Komnick said there are risks associated with the uncertainties over the U.S. Attorney General's promised enforcement of marijuana laws in California, since it is still technically restricted by federal law.
The ordinance prohibits manufacturing, processing, testing and selling non-medical marijuana within city limits. It was extended for 12 months by the vote Tuesday night at the Anderson City Council chambers.
Only one person spoke during public discussion, commenting in favor of extending the moratorium.
