The nation's biggest medical cannabis dispensary, Harborside Health Center, has evolved this week into 'Harborside' with a high-end make-over.
The club celebrated its ten-year anniversary Oct. 3, throws a birthday party tonight at the Oakland Museum of California, and announces new exterior and interior designs and a major re-branding.
It's all part of a new national beauty contest as pot storefronts race to spend millions of dollars on interior designers and decor.
Harborside's team includes experts from Yahoo!, Wieden + Kennedy, Redscout, and West, and Martin Grasser who reportedly worked on the Twitter bird.
Recent national retailer and interior design awards have been won by SPARC dispensary in San Francisco, and TruMed in Phoenix.
Founded in 2006, Harborside is riding high after surviving a federal asset forfeiture attempt. The club is now waging a highly watched tax court case.
Since Harborside's launch, 26 states have legalized medical marijuana, and four legalized adult-use cannabis. Five states vote on adult-use laws this year.
The dispensary boasts more than 100,000 patient members and does brisk business seven days a week in Oakland.
The new exterior, interiors, and re-branding simplifies and strengthens Harborside's message.
"The Harborside name and brand symbol are iconic in the cannabis world," stated John Yost, Chief Marketing Officer for Harborside, ina release. "Any tinkering or updates had to be done with great care, so as not to disturb the bond that exists between Harborside and its members. We conducted several waves of consumer and stakeholder research before even starting the design phase, which helped us create a visible, new identity built on the foundational values of the organization."
Other landmark U.S. shops include Paper & Leaf in Seattle, and Portland's Farma.
