Budward9's Firest Grow - CFL Closet - Growing C4 & Chemo

Hi guys,
I'm about half-way though and thought I'd start up a journal. I noticed this board doesn't have a lot of info on the 2 strains I'm running, so even though I'm a newb and 1/2 way though, maybe the community will find it useful.

I have never grown before. I haven't partaken of marijuana in many many years so I'm not experienced. I bought the seeds to start growing for medical reasons mostly, though I plan to enjoy the high for sure! I chose the Chemo due to reviews elsewhere about it's medicinal value, and the C4 because it has a bit more sativa but is still indica-dominant.

Been reading these forums A LOT. I think I've been quite successful due in no small part to this forum.

What strain is it? Five Chemo and Five C4 seens from vancouver seed bank (store front, not mail order)
Is it Indica, Sativa or Hybrid? I believe Chemo is almost 100% Indica, C4 indica-heavy hybrid
Is it in Veg or Flower stage? Now in flower
If in Veg... For how long? I vegged for 28 days
If in Flower stage... For how long? Today is day 14 of flower
Indoor or outdoor? Indoor closet grow
Soil or Hydro? Soil.
If soil... what is in your mix? Standard potting soil + 25% perlite
If soil... What size pot? 2Gal.
Size of light? Up until today 368watt CFL (2560lumen/plant), Now 460watt (5333lumen/plant) (I added light, and removed 4 "boys".
Ventilation/Cooling? Large box fan (circulation/heat reduction), 240CFM exhaust through 4inch carbon filter. Filter alone is controlling odor. I do have a small Ozone purifier which I sometimes use (it really works well). I exhaust straight into the room that has the closet — window in room is cracked open to cool/ventilate.
Temp of Room/cab? Around 85F (was 95F on average)
RH of Room/cab? 45%
PH of media or res? Incoming water = 8.0, runoff = 5.0 (too low, I know).
Any Pests ? Nope.
How often are you watering? Every 3days
Type and strength of ferts used? Alternating between Standard Foxfarm Trio, then 2tbs/gal blackstrap molasses.

Where I am now, the story so far:
1.) Germinated 5 seeds of each, straight to soil. Initally about 6 came up in a couple of days, the others after 1 week (and I dug into the soil to find them growing the wrong direction). Finally 100% germination. Was done in paper pots under 6 23watt CFLs (5000K color).
2.) Used 16/8 day/night schedule.
3.) At Day 14 of veg, moved to 2gal pots. My grow space was limited to only hold 8 pots comfortably, so 2 each of the Chemo and C4 had to double gup (2 girls, 1 pot) — 8 pots holding 10 seeds.
4.) Day 21 of veg started Top/FIM and LST. I wasnt planning to FIM but I think my topping technique sucked and some of the plants actually got a FIMming.
5.) Struggled with heat — most of my Vegging period was in temps of 88F-100F. Solved this by adding big box fan blow over plants and lights, moving to night-time growing. This moved the temps down to around high 85F, low 70F. I dont seem to have suffered much due to the high veg temps.
6.) Started 1/8 strength nutes on day 11, then 1/4 strength on day 17, then full strength on day 26. Since then it's been a schedule like described at the top of the thread.
7.) Day 28 - Switched to 12/12 light (6700K color).
8.) Day 39 — Two of the "ladies" Jennifer (C4) and Beatrix (Chemo) showed big balls, trashed em.
9.) Day 42 — Two more ladies Marilyn and Monica (Both C4) showe balls, trashed em. Most remaining plants seem female (Tina and Kristen definitely are, pistils visible).
10.) Day 43 (Day 14 of Flower) — Today.

I remove large fan leaves that seem to block bud sites.

The entire grow has had zero pests, mold, and the only leaf discoloration was likely from splashing nute water on them and burning under lights. The plants are a picture of good health.

Mistakes and regrets so far — Didnt get heat under control soon enough, which prevented upping the Lumens. Wanted to Veg for 6 instead of 4 weeks to get higher yield, but I need the harvest due be done around July 4th so just not possible. Didnt add Lime pH stabilizers to soil so my runoff is 5 or 5.5. Closet setup is a bit too ghetto, but will fix that next time out.

I will post several progress pics up until this point. For now, here is the grow closet as of Day 37 a few days ago.

Re: Budward9's First Grow - CFL Closet, Growing C4 and Chemo

Damn, first post and already Type-o'ed the title of my thread - -Doh!

All plants are named after actresses or movie characters.

Anyway, here are the progress pics:

First, here is the whole family at Day 7 - The Chemos are on the left, C4s are on the right. All eventually sprouted and grew fine.

Sorry for the delay, been out of town. Today is Day 47 (Day 17 of 12/12 Flower).

Thanks to those of you who've been checking in on the grow, I may need your expert help!
As of now, they are a picture of good health.

I do have some new pics below, taken on Day 44 (Day 14 of 12/12 Flower).
Since the last update the girls were given a flushing of H20, in an attempt to lower the pH from around 5.
This was partially successful (some plants restored to 6.5, others are stubbornly stuck below 5.5).
After the flush they were given a watering with the standard Fox Farm trio of nutes at full strength (Big Bloom, Grow Big, TigerBloom).

I wonder if I should stop given them the Grow Big or keep going? The Fox Farm schedule says to continue with all 3.

These photos don't show much of the pistil growth yet, but I should have some in a day or two which do show many!
Temps in my region have gone up, and my closet is now peaking out at around 90F. I hope the girls don't go hermie on me.

Here's the closet showing the full canopy as of Day 44. There are 5 pots, holding 6 plants (2 C4, 4 Chemo).

Here are two pics of Kristen, my representative C4.

Finally, here's a family photo with Chemo (left) and C4 (right).

Back with a quick update on Day 49 (Day 30 of Flower). No new waterings or feedings just yet. Buds are growing nicely and
starting to become quite aromatic, necessitating occasional use of my little ozone air purifier. Temps are 90F in the closet.
Growth is explosive. I have to raise my light shelf about 1-2 inches every day or two. You can most clearly see the growth
when comparing the below canopy pic with the one from Day 44 above - 5 days of growth is mostly obscuring my big box fan.

I'm starting to wonder what my yield will be like. I hope at least 0.5oz per plant, but hopefully closer to 1oz.

Now for the pics.

Thanks to everyone who's following, I may need some expert advice as a I get deeper into flowering.

Hi, I have a question for anyone out there with some experience. Would you recommend doing some defoliation?
As you can see from my canopy pic above, my growth is extremely dense on top and quite shady on the bottom.
The buds are exploding in growth up top and kinda lagging below.
Would removing some of the upper canopy leaves help get some dense buds going in the middle of my plants?
How much should be removed?
Any responses appreciated.:thanks:
Thanks,
Budward

Ninja Edit: I should mention I have removed quite a few fan leaves throughout the process so far, but I've seen mention of how it can be dangerous to do this during flowering. I'm leaning towards doing it, maybe on select plants.

usually if defoliation is done during flower it is done to the lower areas of the plants not the top of the plants. i only take off lower leaves and leaves that are shading bud sites. the lower areas of the plants may not produce much more then popcorn bud. some members feel defoliating around day 20-25 of flower then around day 45 of flower is the correct time to remove fan leaves.

Hey, thanks for the advice man. I'll go easy on the defoliation.
It's going to be interesting to see how this grow turns out, what with the too-low pH and the too-high temps...

Hi, I'm back on Day 53, Day 33 of 12/12 Flower.
All the ladies got a drink of water tonight, no nutes this time.
Things had been pretty much perfect in terms of how the plants looked up until now. Now, however, it seems
I'm seeing some of the negative effects from my pH and heat troubles.

But I'm also now starting to see trichomes - so things are still pretty good.

Specifically about my problems, there are 2:
1.) "Leia", one of my Chemo who is having to share a pot with another lady "Crusher" is showing some sort of problem on a few lower leafs - pic below.
Maybe a Cal or Mag def? Any ideas?

I flushed the every loving shit out of Leia today, about 3X her pot volume.

2.) "Tina", of my only 2 remaining C4s is growing so fast she grew right into one of my lights. Burned part of the top cola :(.
I think I will have remedied this by repositioning the lights much higher, and reducing some of the heat stress by moving up
the box fan so its blowing on 'high' right on the lights, and also moving from a passive to active intake (80CFM).

We'll have to see how these changes help, or don't.

Now for the pics.

Here is "Leia", showing the nasty leaf. Poor thing. Otherwise she's growing like a champ.

Here's the canopy.

This is Tina, showing just below the heat-stressed/burned area, plus you can see the trichomes.

Thats all for today, back in a few. Thanks again to those who are following and offering advice. Now I need it!

It's better than sayin "subbed"

That sounds like i'm not allowed to play.

And yes....Leia will eventually turn to the dark side a few days before her death....maybe...

+ double reps for grow and star wars knowledge.

You got here a fan of Star Wars :thumb:

Some quick BudPorn, its my champion plant Tina The C-4 on Day 55, Day 25F. She's the tallest of them all at 28" (71cm) above the soil, probably 3X higher than
when I switched to 12/12.
Tina_Dav_55.png

I also went to the local hydro store and got some pH UP solution, some FoxFarm Sledgehammer Flush - both purchased with the intent of
fixing the Leia problem (which I seem to also see on other plants). I suspect the root of the problem is nute lockout due to salt build-up and low pH.
But I will delay messing with the chems until I get a new pH meter since mine broke.
I also got some Dolemite Lime for my next grow to prevent this from ever happening.

Quick update on Day 59, Day 29 of 12;12 Flowering.
I have no idea how these girls are gonna work in terms of their medical value or strength of their high, but
they sure are two hardy strains. I'm a total newb at this and in spite of the excessive heat (85-90F in my closet lately),
and the low pH, they still seem to be growing well.

Since last update they got one standard full strength FoxFarm Trio watering, and another watering with some molasses water (today).

Below are some pics. Based on the expertise of anyone reading - what do you think? In particular, what
do you think of the internode spacing? Is it so large that I won't get anything but popcorn nugs? That's
almost how it appears. If so, likely due to the use of CFLs I guess.

Anyway, the pics . . .

Kristen the C-4. Showing a few areas up top where she grew into the lights (a week or more ago.)

Sarah the Chemo. Lookin good.

Well, at leas the leaf shots make it seem as though the seedbank sold me what they promised!
