Police on Spain's Costa Brava have arrested two Britons alleged to have been the ringleaders of a drug smuggling gang that has imported millions of pounds worth of cannabis to the UK.

The smuggling operation involved hiding bricks of the drug within air conditioning units bound for Britain by lorry from an industrial warehouse near Alicante, on Spain's south-eastern Mediterranean coast.

The two British men arrested, along with an Irish national, allegedly set up the equipment transport company as a front to send huge shipments of cannabis.

Police raided the warehouse over the weekend, seizing 20 bricks of the drug, amounting to around half a ton with an estimated street value of 2.5 million pounds.

The men, who have not been named by police, have been linked to another gang of Britons arrested last month after stealing more than a ton of cannabis worth an estimated £6 million from Moroccan suppliers.

Police said the recent arrests followed surveillance carried out after the previous raid and that "the two criminal gangs were linked".
