Bozeman Considers Medical Marijuana Public Use Ban

Bozeman city officials want to make it illegal to smoke medical marijuana in public.

City officials drafted a proposed ordinance to regulate medical marijuana caregivers that includes a public-use ban. Those violating it could be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $500 and sentenced to up to six months in jail.

City Attorney Greg Sullivan said Thursday the restriction helps address community concerns about how visually prominent medical marijuana will become.

Caregiver Robert Carpenter says the public-use ban is understandable.

The proposed ordinance would not allow medical marijuana dispensaries within 1,000 feet of a school or in residential areas.

City commissioners could vote on provisionally adopting the rules as soon as July 12.
