United States border patrol agents seized nearly half a million dollars of marijuana in Clint, Texas, over the weekend, according to a news release. Agents suspect the marijuana was destined for New Mexico markets and El Paso. Vanessa Martinez, public information officer for the U.S. Border patrol, said three male subjects were taken into custody after 604 pounds of marijuana were confiscated in their possession.
According to the release, on Nov. 1 agents assigned to the Clint Station noticed two suspicious individuals and a vehicle near a pedestrian border crossing. The two subjects, which Martinez described as backpackers, fled to Mexico when agents approached them.
A drug-sniffing dog was deployed and four bundles of marijuana were located in the trunk of the vehicle. The two subjects who fled agents at the crossing were located hiding in nearby brush with seven bundles more of marijuana. Martinez said the investigation is still ongoing and all three subjects, who names are not being released, have been detained pending possible prosecution by the Drug Enforcement Agency. It is unclear if the subjects are American citizens or Mexican nationals, and agents are possibly investigating the source of the marijuana according to Martinez. Martinez said that while this is not the largest bust of marijuana this year, another in January near the border was valued over 2 million, it is an example of how the agency is responding to local communities drug prevention needs.
