Illinois - Boone County could soon amend zoning ordinances to allow a medical marijuana growth center or dispensary to be built in light industrial areas. Gina Delrose, associate planner for the Belvidere-Boone County Planning Department, said that in August the Zoning Board of Appeals will decide whether to recommend a special use permit regarding medical marijuana growth centers and dispensaries to the County Board.
Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Compassionate use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act on Aug. 1, 2013, which allows strictly regulated medical marijuana use and the establishment of a limited number growing facilities and dispensaries around the state. Each police district will be allowed one growth facility by the state. Police District 16, which includes Winnebago, Boone, Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties, is allowed to have two dispensaries in addition to a growth facility.
Delrose said she doesn't think the county is pushing to build a growth facility or dispensary, especially since Stephenson County has already received interest from companies looking to build a growth facility. The county is most likely considering amending zoning ordinances governing so that it is prepared if targeted for medical cannabis development in the future, she said.
