BMW and Mercedes Use Hemp in Their Cars

Remind me why hemp is illegal to grow in the U.S.: if you drive a BMW or a Mercedes Benz, or wear Armani jeans or Patagonia shirts, you could be consuming hemp.

Its fiber turns up in car door panels, insulation and clothing. Its seeds make tasty granola and frozen desserts, its oil expensive cosmetics and ecologically friendly soap.

If you use these products, you won’t be jailed for possession. But would-be hemp farmers’ fear of arrest is what keeps the U.S. importing the stuff instead of growing its own. [Bloomberg]

I don't write about hemp often, mainly because it's not actually a drug, but it bears repeating that the only reason hemp cultivation is illegal is because a bunch of paranoid drug warriors are utterly terrified of it. As stupid as the arguments against legalizing marijuana are, the case against hemp is even more mindless and pathetic.

Just pause for a moment and think about the fact that the DEA banned a substance used to make door panels for luxury cars, simply because it's related to marijuana. That level of marijuana hysteria probably wouldn’t be possible in the current political climate, but we're stuck with it until Congress admits this is ridiculous.

And I guarantee you that if Congress attempts to legalize hemp cultivation in the U.S., there will actually be people who freak out about it and try to argue that hemp somehow endangers America's youth.

:rollit::peace::peace::peace:Enough already. I think the the best thing our new President can do is take a stance or adopt a measure that would allow us to use hemp and/or marijuana in the confines of out own homes atleast and do what we want with the stuff without the stigma. Cause that all it is a stigma. Aside from the greediness of out govenment. They are just mad because there is no way for them to regulate this stuff its nature. It grows like tress and grass duh. Hey its Gods', but the govenment wants their peice of every pie that we consume. You know we the consumer? So one day I do believe they will make it legal again. We just hope its in our life time. :peace::peace::peace::rollit:

omg panic! lock yourself and the kids away! hemp is in them there hills!

I kinda disagree with brown suga. While ur arguement pertains to marijuana, not so for hemp. There is an easy way to regulate hemp and it would save us shit loads of money and resources. It is even good for the soil so it would make farmers yield more of the crops they plant behind their help year after year.

The plight of the american farmer right now is pretty dismal. If you follow npr they're doin a summer special on farms and i would not want to be a farmer right now, well not a traditional farmer! They supply up with our food, maybe it will take a food shortage in america for us to remember their value. We need to give them the right to their resources. Hemp will increase their annual incomes greatly and the crop is not resource intensive. The problem is there is huge monies backing the continued prohibition. Citizens need to take a stand on this, it is beyond insane. j

its on the books but its such a hassle through the DEA most just say forget about it...I have read somewhere that you would have to have razor wire, perimeter fencing, and other stuff to make a max security prison compound for these things, then they have to test the THC levels ((its the DEA we are talking about))....bunch of hassle and stress just tryin to do some good..

Well I was always told easy street was generally the wrong direction, so if legalizing MJ is proving to be difficult, I can believe that I am doing the right thing fighting to help people. The hemp plant is a marvelous plant, with well over 1,000 uses, including renewable fuel, and paper. So as it is illegal to grow hemp, but not illegal to import......ALRIGHT who the hell has hemp fields in afganistan? Could it be BUSH????? probably right on top of his oil fields, What a monopolizing jerk
