Black Friday Deals At Marijuana Dispensaries

Black Friday is green Friday at marijuana dispensaries this Thanksgiving weekend.

Marijuana shoppers are just like everyone else, they are looking for deals and the dispensaries are rolling them out.

"On Black Friday, dispensaries can expect to move more products — and see many more customers than on a typical day," said Joel Milton, CEO of Baker, an online e-commerce platform for marijuana dispensaries. "In 2014-15, we saw that customers lined up around the block at 8 a.m. for the sales. In 2016, the lines are still going to be common. In fact, many of our clients have been actively telling customers to shop online through Baker during the busy season."

Milton said that just like Target, he hires additional seasonal workers for Black Friday. "We are expecting a much more significant bump than the 2x spike in orders that we saw last year, and we are bringing on an additional support specialist to help during this busy season," Milton said.

The average dispensary order size last year was smaller than normal, but the order volume was two times the average day. "I think customers were stocking up to give cannabis gifts to their loved ones in time for the new year," said Milton.

One example is Bloom Dispensary in Phoenix AZ. They are advertising Thanksgiving specials of 20% discounts on concentrates, Dixie Elixir products and some vape products. They're also selling selected strains for $180 an ounce. Veterans receive an extra 25% discount. Another example is TruMed dispensary, also in Phoenix that advertised a two-day Thanksgiving special. Customers were urged to stock up for the holidays while prices were right. Among the deals was an offer for a free "pre-roll" for every $50 spent (limit three). A pre-roll is a dispensary term for a joint.

Milton also noted that sales pick up before the holiday as well. "Weed Wednesday" is what he called it. Milton said that concentrate orders tripled on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Last year, they experienced a 55% increase in transactions on Wednesday and a 28% increase in average order size."

"We think it's more discreet and easier to bring to family events so Grandma isn't going to get upset," he said. It could be that with this year's divisive election Thanksgiving could be especially stressful and some family members have decided to just chill out instead.
