Hello guys! Is anybody familiar with the bio-intensive gardening? Is a method where you reliable on your crops. Its a very huge subject, is bio but it has differences with the organics products such as: in bio-intensive all of your compost comes for your plant that you grow on the season. Basically is a system of growing where you cover all your nutrition needs in your plants and your crops and only! Everything comes from your farm - mini farm- garden. The basic method is to plant 60% high carbon crops with some food such as: corn, wheat, etc and generally all the plants with biomass. These are the compost of our soil.
30% of high calories crop such as potatoes, burdock, garlic, and parsnips, which produce a large amount of calories for the diet.
The rest 10% goes to vitamins and minerals vegetables such as tomatos, letucces.

The bio-intensive gardening has some basic features :

• Deep soil preparation - double diging, which develops good soil structure.
Once this structure is established, it may be maintained
for several years with 2-inch-deep surface cultivation (until
compaction once again necessitates deep soil preparation).
• The use of compost (humus) for soil fertility and nutrients.
• Close plant spacing and not in rows, as in nature. The close plant spacing saves space and also creates a micro climate under the leaves of the vegetables because of the close spacing.

• Synergistic planting of crop combinations so plants that are
grown together enhance each other also known as companion planting.

The goals of bio-intestive method is to understand how a garden or mini-farm can

• produce all of its own compost material initially without
having to import any straw, manure, or other carbonaceous
material for the soil’s humus sustainability,
• maintain nutrient sustainability.
.

This are some very general things about Bio - Intensive gardeing with the help of the book How to Grow More Vegetables 6th edition 2002. :thanks:

PS: I am very new to the Bio-Intensive gardening but i am so excited about it! Is one of the best methods and the most environmental friendly with the best results.
