A South Carolina lawmaker has filed a bill to allow the use of medical marijuana in South Carolina. Rep. Todd Rutherford (D-Columbia) filed Thursday what he's called the "Put Patients First Act." Under the proposal, a patient who has a debilitating medical condition and who has medical verification completed by a doctor can register with the state health department. Once they do, that person would get a registry identification card which would allow them to purchase the drug.
"The time has come to put aside archaic misconceptions of medical marijuana and put patients first," said Rep. Todd Rutherford. "I hear devastating stories every single day from people who are battling epilepsy or suffering from a brain tumor who desperately need medical marijuana to treat the debilitating symptoms." Rutherford says eligible candidates for the registry would be people with cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and cachexia. People would be allowed to have up to six marijuana plants and two ounces for medical use. The bill would also put penalties on people who try to obtain the marijuana through fraud.
