Or whatever you want to call us less than stellar breeders.

I recently caught myself making a stupid beginner mistake. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. When spreading pollen around there is lots to be considered. I know this and almost made a mistake of using a great plant in the wrong way.

I really love the Chocoloco I grew so of course I want to continue those genetics. I reversed one clone for pollen. While I can use this pollen for selfing this strain it is not a good idea to use it as a male for hybrids. I had planned to make 2 hybrids with it. Thing is using this as pollen for anything other than the Chcocoloco I could be imparting a longer flower time. Something I don't want to do. Flower time is not a huge thing. Still in cases like this it is best to use the shorter flowering strain for hybrids. I am making lots of S-1 seeds from this so I can work with it later. Great Chocolate Thai high from these seeds. No chocolate that I can see but who cares. Chocolate would be the only thing I want to transfer to another strain. All the other stuff I can get with this strain as a female.

Remember to always look at the little things. Making your own seeds is fun and can save you money. This will only work if you do it right.

While this post is here I might as well mention a couple other things.

Like I mentioned it is the little things that you need to watch. You can tell a lot about a plant just by watching. I always like to run a freebie or 2 just tolook at different stuff. This time I have a Glueberry that is one of these freebies. Trichome production is a lot more prominent in this plant then most the others. It is showing what I wanted to see in the Tangalope. So I am going to give it the pollen from the JC 2 male instead.

I was watching this plant as I was all of them. It was the early trichome production that made it stand out above the others. This does not mean it will be great. Sometimes it is these early sign's that say it all. If I decide now it lets the seeds have time to finish. If I am wrong no big deal it is only 2 branches.

Like I said better to choose now and be wrong then not do it and be really impressed with the Glueberry. In the end If I don't like the high of the Glueberry I can give them away. From what I have found early trichome production usually means profuse trichome production. If that is the case with Glueberry then I want to cross it with this resinous male from the JC 2

Always nice to wet a seed you made and have it pop. After a couple months drying. I tried a test run for germination rate on a feminized hybrid. I made. I took a broad selection of seeds to try. Both good ones and questionable ones. With in 24 hours 3 of the 5 had popped. I think I will be running one or 2 next run for a trial.

Making a seed is almost as fun as growing that seed.

Yeah. That's the one. Thinking of running a couple next run. I just haven't figured out what I will drop to do it. It is strictly night time weed so one would be as good as another. As long as they are good. I am using both the M.O.B. and the Purple Betty for that right now perfectly. No reason the hybrid won't be just as good. Both parents proven genetics. What kind of hybrid stuff I get from this combo is the interesting part.

I can't wait to see how they grow out M.O.B has what a 42-56 day flowering? That should make for a great hybrid, vigorous growth + fast flowering, and potency= greatness at least in my non breeder logic lol.

Hi @Jackalope,
Sounds like you have the breeders dilemma, want the smooth chocolate uplifting Sativa in a quick small high yield Indica package. With some purple blueberry notes and enough cbd to take the edge off :)
It will be fun to see which traits dominate your f1’s.

I just joined the backyard breeders myself. I’m starting with something easy, (hope). I just started some seedlings from my Northern Lights x Skunk. I have a couple strains I crossed this summer to try out. I’ve been peeking in to some postings to learn a bit about breeding for home growers.

I think the M.O.B. hybrid will go a little longer. It still should finish by week 8 or so. Purple Betty is not as fast as the M.O.B. still fast enough for most people.

Boatshoe. I am not really looking for chocolate in a indica package. The whole thing evolves around the Chocolate Thai high not the flavor. I have a plan for chocolate flavor in the future.

From what I have read. The chocolate flavor comes late in flower. I normally never take any of my strains that far. The high is plenty strong at mostly cloudy. I do like that the Chocoloco has good percents of CBD. They say it doesn't affect you but you sure can tell its in there.

What, you smoke it for the high? Who knew? LOL.
:bravo:

I’ve never seen chocolate Thai but I’ve certainly had Thai, especially Thai stick back in the day. I have no idea how those flavors are passed on genetically. I guess it is a combination of terpenes, and it would require some selection and back crossing to get the right genes. How much do those terps affect the high, those subtle “non-psycho active” components. That scientific basis is not well understood but the knowledge is accumulating.
Possibly some day, with gene mapping and splicing, it will be possible to dial up a flavor/psycho/appearance/smokability etc and have genetic material created at will. Science fiction, haha.

My near term goals for breeding are to get some reliable quality seed supply, cheaply. Skunk#1 seemed like the best strain to start with, the build on the classics. For outdoor growing needs here it needs to ripen early, which is not quite the same as having a quick flower cycle indoors. Also it is cool here, usually cloudy, high rh, moldy, bugs. By selecting the parents that grew well last year, the F1 babies maybe be more suited. We’ll see :)
At first I was going to just do a germination test, as you did. Then I figured I’ll just go ahead and start some out. You’re right, it’s exciting to grow from the seeds created by your own self.

Skunk #1 is always a good choice. Not only is it one of the most used strains for breeding. At least a few clone only strains came from her seeds. Change the name or not it is still a Skunk #1 pheno.

Here is a picture of the last of the Chocoloco breeding project. It is the cute little girl in the back. The males around here are Critical. I used both males as the main difference in these S-1 seeds is flavor.

All the clones will be fully seeded so there will be plenty good or bad. These are what I am going to end up with.
Chocoloco x Chocoloco fem.
Chocoloco x Jacks Cleaner 2 reg.
Chocoloco x Critical fem.

The Chocoloco x Critical should be a great cross, but I'm excited to see what JC2 brings to the table when crossed with the Chocoloco. I've never smoked Thai weed, but my mentor told me some stories about buying some pure Thai back in the day. He said he got a carton of cigs, but instead of cigs in the packs it was joints rolled up. He said it was the best bud he had ever smoked, and that's coming from a guy that was buying hash by the kilo when stationed in Germany. That's why the Thai peeks my interest.

Thai genetics are in probably 70 to 80% of all strains out there. It was such a big building block for the early breeders. Pretty much how Skunk #1, White Widow, and Blueberry are used today. Both indicas and sativas had it in them.

I agree with you on the interest in the JC 2 hybrid. Thai was such a great building block what happens when you breed back into it with much more potent strains of today.

Funny shit. I know how to replace joints with cigarettes in a unopened pack. It is not a easy project. Learned it putting joints into packs of Camel non filters on home visits. So they could be sent to me in the State juvenile hall. LOL worked fine. They gave us a pack of cigarettes a day. I just had to wait for the special pack LMAO. Never got caught.

Lmao that's to funny, a pack a day keeps the doc away. He was getting his Thai joints in packs of Lucky Stripes. I did a little research on the Chocoloco, and you will most definitely not be disappointed crossing it with JC2. You can probably see the jealousy projecting from me lol.
