AJO, AZ – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Ajo station horse patrol unit seized 567 pounds of marijuana early Friday valued at more than $450,000.

Agents using a thermal imaging camera spotted a group of individuals walking near State Route 85, and carrying large backpacks.

Agents from Ajo's horse patrol unit responded to the area and discovered 12 burlap sacks abandoned in an apparent attempt to avoid apprehension.

Agents took the marijuana to the Ajo station for processing.

The increased use of technology, such as thermal imaging cameras, has greatly improved the Border Patrol's situational awareness, the patrol said, especially in remote areas.

The combination of technology and specialty units is enhancing the Border Patrol's effectiveness in combating the smuggling of illicit contraband into the U.S., agents said.

From October through December, agents seized more than 270,000 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value exceeding $122 million.

This amount represents a 17 percent increase in marijuana seizures from the same period the previous year.

It never ceases to amaze me how they come up with these dollar amounts for MJ.
Here in Washington they would have called that a 3.4 million dollar bust.

Yes, that's correct, and if my maths is also correct, the Oct - Dec seizure of 270,000 pounds are valued at $28.24 an ounce. (* see below)

Is it the decriminalization of medical marijuana that is causing this downward pressure on the price of grass, or is this just another sad example of the US public school system's inability to teach basic mathematics skills, like simple multiplication and division?

*Calculation of $ / oz.

270,000 pounds * 16 oz / pound = 4,320,000 oz.
$122,000,000 / 4,320,000 oz = $28.24 per oz.

This is reminiscent of the 1970-1972 (pre-Paraquat) street price of an ounce of good quality Mexican grass in the Rocky Mountain west.

Maybe they're going by purchased price? lol :roorrip:
