Yes, regs take longer, about twice as long to grow from seed to harvest than autoflowers do.
And I would not say autos get less yield...given the amount of time it takes for an auto to grow from seed to harvest they get decent yields. Photos (regs) can have bigger yields because you can essentially endlessly veg them to create a huge plant with a nice structure that will give good results. However...more training=more time for growth...and more time to reach said yield.
Its a give and take from what I have gathered, lots of pros and cons to both.
So my question to you...if you could get say 5oz off of two autos in 2-3 months time or 8-10oz off of a photo (reg) in 3-4 months which would you pick?

Auto's, well why would i want to run a 400w hps for 18/6 in flowering when reg/fem is 12/12... that is ya don't mind paying the electric bill ?
Auto's vs reg/fem well you might be surprised some reg/fem seed can match auto's on flowering time depending on how long you wish to veg for plus flowering time !
Yield wise reg/fem seed hands down all the time once ya dialled in a few skills

IMHO auto's are for at least somewhat experienced growers. I've had serious PH issues with mine (all my own fault) that I think I've resolved but the yield is gonna suck now due to that. I planted a photo with them which is doing much better and I figured out the PH b4 flower so I can get it back on track. It will take a little longer but at least I should get a decent harvest for all the time and effort. No dice with auto's.

Also, the amount of electricity it takes from 12/12 to 18/6...atleast where I live...is equivalent to 20 extra bucks a month, and I run 1000w.

With reg seeds you don't know if it is female or male until you switch to flower.

Difference in 12/12 and 18/6 is less than $16USD month for me. Yield isn't a problem either. Potency ? Meh, it's a wash, I can only get so high.
My season is mid oct until late may. I'll get in two grows during that time frame and supply myself until next Oct harvest comes in.

Notice you're in the UK like me .... so number of plants you keep may be important to you if you're just growing some personal for you to smoke? Or you may be looking to scale it up and go commercial ...
Being illegal ... there are four bands of offence, based upon number of plants ... and within each of those bands, there are four scales of offence.
I like to keep my chance of imprisonment as low as possible: so I keep the number of plants at 9 or below ... and my grow is purely personal, so any offence would be for cultivation rather than production (growing rather than selling).
Much depends on what you're trying to achieve ...

That's what I did for my first grow. Per previous reply I did have issues with nutes etc but I had the same idea and it makes perfect sense. I'll be harvesting my autos in a few weeks then flipping to 12/12. I had 3 auto's and 3 regular photos. I have 1 female so far for sure in the regulars and cut 6 clones. Assuming at least a couple make it (my first time cloning so fingers crossed) I should have a decent SOG in 3 weeks when I flip. If you are like myself and don't yet have a veg and flower room I think this makes the most sense.

Now I'm stuck cuz I'm in 12/12 and do not want to start any beans cuz I feel it would be a waste to grow the seed on 12/12 its whole life

Another option would be forcing one of the auto's to seed if u can get non feminized autos or using the Colloidal silver method. With an abundant supply of cheap auto seed u could do a perpetual grow in a single closet too.
