Former Attorney General Bob Stephan (STEF'-ihn) never used marijuana to deal with the effects of cancer treatment.
But he's now a spokesman for legalizing the drug for medical purposes.
Stephan was the state's longest-serving attorney general, holding that office from 1979 to 1995. He said he's been a backer of medical marijuana since the 1980s.
He battled cancer in the 1970s and underwent chemotherapy for seven years. He said each treatment left him nauseous and he experienced a good deal of pain.
Stephan said any drug that could help patients deal with those problems should be available.
He took part in a Statehouse news conference today by a pro-medical marijuana group, the Kansas Compassionate Care Coalition.
