Three more states voted to legalize medical marijuana on Election Night.
Voters in California, Nevada and Massachusetts approved measures on Tuesday. With this increasing support to legalize marijuana in the country, is New York State next in line?
At this point, it's obviously not clear. But those in the medical marijuana industry say this trend is definitely paving the way for a nationwide push to legalize the drug's recreational use. Advocates believe this is just the beginning.
"It's really going to help the future initiatives throughout the country," says Mark DiPasquale.
Marine veteran Mark DiPasquale has been relying on medical marijuana to help with his PTSD. But aside from its medical use, he believes New York State should also legalize recreational marijuana.
"We should be able to use cigarette, alcohol, all these different drugs within reason because we get all those from our doctors anyways and other drugs. So why wouldn't you add cannabis to that?" says DiPasquale.
Right now, marijuana is legal in eight states and Washington D.C. advocates say this reflects the nation's changing attitude toward cannabis. So, how will this trend affect New York State?
Columbia Care CEO Nicholas Vita says this trend has an indirect impact on the medical marijuana industry. "It means that the product becomes more accessible and I think the need for increased regulation and increased study is that much more apparent and that much more pressing."
Nancy Adams of the Monroe County Medical Society says, although we've seen changes in other states, we are still far from legalizing recreational marijuana.
Adams says, "What we're more likely to see happen is that use cases for medical marijuana - so which diseases are approved for use - may be expanding in the future."
But Mark DiPasquale still believes New York State is next in line to fully legalize marijuana.
"We should've actually been one of the first," says DiPasquale.
Further widening the access to marijuana, voters in Florida, North Dakota and Arkansas legalized the use of medical marijuana. Meanwhile, Montana voters also passed a measure to expand access to the drug.
