Arizona Allows Boy Of Just Five A MMJ Card To Help Control His Crippling Seizures

A five-year-old Arizona boy has been granted a medical marijuana card by the state government - allowing his parents to purchase pot and administer it to their young child.

Zander Welton, of Mesa, Arizona, suffers from severe seizures that are sometimes so violent and sometimes so paralyzing that they prevent him from breathing and cause him to turn blue.

His parents, Jennifer and Jacob Welton say they have tried everything to treat their son's illness - which has him trapped in his own body as s result of cortical dysplasia, a genetic brain defect.

'I wouldn't even be thinking about this if it wouldn't do something beneficial,' Mrs Welton told KNXV-TV.

'I don't want him stone, I want him better,' she added.

The issue of giving marijuana with young children with chronic epilepsy has come to the forefront after CNN's Dr Sanjay Gupta publicly reversed his stance on marijuana legalization.

He attributed much of his change of heart to little Charlotte Figi, a six-year-old from Colorado who had seen a remarkable recovery in her epilepsy after using the drug.

Little Zander has had two brain surgeries, including one where doctors implanted a device in his head that sends electrical impulses to one of the nerves in his brain.

He has also been on a host of medications - mostly part of trial and error testing. Some worked, but had unbearable side effects. Others did little or nothing.

Arizona voters narrowly approved a ballot measure allowing the use of medical marijuana - though marijuana remains tightly controlled.

Mr and Mrs Welton had to get two doctors to sign off on Zander's prescription. They also had to be certified as caregivers in order to be allowed to purchase the drug.

They plan to use CBD drops - an oil that contains one of the active ingredients in marijuana, but minimizes the 'high' associated with the drug.

Unfortunately, it's also costly. The state of Arizona pays for the $5,000 cocktail of pharmaceuticals that Zander currently takes every month.

But the $1,200-a-month for medical marijuana would not be covered by the state - or even the family's insurance, meaning they must pay the entire cost out of pocket.

The family has launched a campaign online to raise $14,400 - which will pay for just one year of the medical pot treatments.
