An Independence Day altercation that started on Lake Marion turned into a drug arrest for a Clarendon County couple.
According to reports from the Clarendon County Sheriff's Department, John Wesley Peecher, 52, and Rita Denise Peecher, 44, both of Lot 4-Polly's Landing, Summerton, were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Investigator Todd Avant said an unknown caller from Polly's Landing alerted the sheriff's department about a civil disturbance wherein someone was heard to say they were getting a gun.
" The Peechers stated they were on the lake when three males in another boat cut them off." Avant said. "Mr. Peecher stated words were exchanged and the three men, Chad Morris, Hasten Terry and Jamie Griffin, pulled up beside the Peecher's boat and made threatening remarks. Mr. Peecher stated to the deputies that he did shout to his wife to get the gun but that his intention was only to scare the three men off, as the gun in question was an orange flare gun he had on the boat."
Avant said the three men told the deputies that Rita Peecher pointed a gun at them while they were on the lake. The Peechers told the deputies they didn't have a gun and gave consent for the deputies to search the boat. The only gun the deputies found was the flare gun. The deputies then asked and received consent to search the residence for a gun.
" While searching the home for a weapon, the deputies came across the marijuana in a drawer in the bedside table," Avant said. "The marijuana found was over an ounce and found in a big zip-loc type bag. There were prescription drugs also found in someone else's name and we are checking that out."
After being arrested, both John and Rita Peecher were taken to the Clarendon County Correction Center. They were each released on July 7 on $1,000 cash bonds.
