All Suspects in Medical Pot Armed Robbery in Custody

Two men being sought in connection with an attempted armed robbery of medical marijuana early Thursday morning have been arrested by Paradise police.

Sgt. Steve Rowe said Magalia resident Mitchell Essex and Sacramento resident James Alarcon were taken into custody late Thursday.

Essex matched a description of one of four men who attempted to steal mature marijuana plants from a grow in the 1100 block of Nunneley Road.

Rowe said a probation search at his Magalia home led to his arrest. Further investigation identified Alarcon as the fourth man involved.

Two of the suspects, including a man who allegedly threatened victims with a handgun, were arrested near the Nunneley Road home shortly after the robbery attempt.

Police recovered the weapon, a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, where a suspect discarded it near a fence line.

All four men have been charged with armed robbery and conspiracy and booked into the Butte County Jail in Oroville.

Rowe said pot the suspects had cut from eight of nine plants was recovered and returned to the victims.

The victims chased down one suspect and held him for police minutes after the robbery took place, about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

Rowe said the pot was being grown legally for medicinal purposes.
