Lubbock, Texas - Advocates are working to allow Texas farmers to grow hemp, a cousin to marijuana.

The Texas Hemp Industries Association highlighted the benefits provided by hemp and its many uses while pointing out that hemp is nothing like marijuana.

In an effort to do just that, the Texas Hemp Industries Association is hosting an event Oct. 10 to break down hemp's history, business, and how it's farmed.

"The purpose behind this is just to get information to people so they understand the differences between hemp and marijuana. That they would begin supporting and reaching out to their representatives and senators both at the state and the national level to define industrial hemp separately from marijuana and allow our farmers to begin farming hemp," said Coleman Hemphill with the association.

According to the TXHIA, hemp can already be grown in 29 states and its products can be used in Texas.
