Connecticut legalized medical marijuana in 2012 and launched the program in 2014.
HERE ARE SOME FACTS ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
- There are more than 14,500 patients registered to purchase medical marijuana in Connecticut.
- To get a prescription, a qualifying patient is seen by one of more than 500 registered physicians, who certifies that the patient has one of the qualifying conditions. The patient then registers with the state.
- The patient then chooses one of the eight dispensaries, including one in Branford and one in Milford (a ninth is approved) and works with a pharmacist to determine which product will work best for his or her condition.
- Four growing facilities, including one in West Haven, have been approved to produce medical marijuana.
- There are 22 diseases that can be treated with medical marijuana, including cancer, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS and post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Patients under 18 can be approved for six conditions.
- The cost to the patient could range from $200 to more than $1,000 a month, depending on the strain of marijuana and the dose. Compassionate-care programs are available for those who can't afford the drug.
- In October, the state began a research program to study medical marijuana and its effectiveness.
