DEL RIO, Texas - Customs and Border Protection-Border Patrol agents while on a routine patrol and monitoring local traffic patterns, perform an immigration traffic stop near Quemado, Texas that yielded more than 650 pounds of marijuana late Thursday morning.
Agents assigned to work along the Rio Grade River in Quemado, Texas were making their routine rounds, checking on known crossing sites and load up areas when they spotted a pickup truck parked off the shoulder of the road up along the fence.
The agents immediately recognized that the truck was park just a few hundred feet form a notorious loading site for the smuggling of undocumented alien and narcotics. As the agents started to drive up on the truck to investigate, the truck attempted to drive away in order to avoid detection, the agents caught up to the truck in order to run the registration off of the license plate.
At this point, the agents could actually see what appeared to be large duffle bags in the rear portion of the cab from the rear window. These large duffle bags are normally consistent with the smuggling of narcotics which have been consistently documented with other marijuana seizures.
The agents initiated a traffic stop by activating their emergency equipment, lights and siren, based on their suspicions of illegal activity. The driver of the truck ignored the lights and siren and attempted to elude the agents by immediately leaving the highway and attempting to drive cross country.
The vehicle came to an abrupt stop about fifty yards off the highway in a pasture. The agents on scene reacted quickly and were able to secure the driver and pickup truck without incident. A cursory inspection of the front cab and rear cab of the truck confirmed the agents' observations and suspicions. The green military style duffle bags contained what appeared to be marijuana.
A total of 9 military style duffle bags containing a little over 650 pounds of marijuana were recovered. The marijuana is valued at over $530,000.00.
The marijuana and driver were turned over to the Drug and Enforcement Administration. The Ford F-150 Super Crew was turned over the Del Rio Sector Border Patrol Office of Vehicle Seizure and Asset Forfeiture.
