Arlington has begun building a framework for the arrival of medical marijuana dispensaries, which has already garnered interest from parties wishing to set up dispensaries in town.

James Feeney, the Health Compliance Officer for Arlington's Board of Health, told Arlington Patch that four parties have inquired about bringing a medical marijuana dispensary to the town, but that only one party has taken the next step and appeared before the Board of Selectmen.

Feeney said the Board of Health wishes to set a framework that dictates local oversight over a dispensary.

"If it's going to be here, we should be able to keep an eye on it," Feeney told Arlington Patch. "This will help ensure that only authorized people are engaged in the business, and providing products only to those with a documented need."

Feeney also added that the parties only wish to open a retail location, and the dispensaries will not include a facility that cultivates the product.

Arlington's Director of Health and Human Services Christine Bongiorno announced Monday that the board will hold a public hearing discussing regulation of the sale and cultivation of medical marijuana. The meeting is set for Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the first floor conference room of the Senior Center on 27 Maple Street.

Feeney couldn't speak in certain terms about issues that could arise, but said that the department wants to set a framework for those issues.

"Its just a matter of being prepared and having a mechanism in place," Feeney said."We will be able to have some local oversight. I don't know what [issues] will arise, but we want to be able to address them if they do arise."
