Police officers are still searching for the people responsible for dumping almost $1 million worth of marijuana in Bahamian waters.
Police Press Liaison Officer, Inspector Walter Evans said around 11 a.m. last Thursday, officers from Operation Ba-hamas Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) spotted three vessels in the area of Sandy Port, Abaco, dropping off what seemed to be illegal contraband. Upon further investigation he added, 56 bales of marijuana were found that day, and an additional three bales were found in the same area on Friday.
According to Insp. Evans, the drugs had a combined weight of 2,500 pounds, with a street value of "just under" $1/4 million. He added that the shipment was since transported from Abaco to New Provi-dence.
No arrests have been made in connection with the find, and police officials are unable to say at this time if Bahamians are involved.
But Assistant Commissioner of Police, Reginald Ferguson, reported over the weekend that based on history, Bahamians are likely to be a part of the operation.
The biggest seizure for the year, however, occurred back in June after Drug Enforce-ment Unit agents seized $1.9 million in drugs and cash in the capital.
The agents raided a Glad-stone Road apartment, where they found roughly $1,712,000 in drugs.
According to the authorities, 105 kilograms of *******, with a street value of $1,680,000, was found in the apartment along with 32-and-a-half pounds of marijuana, which had an estimated street value of $32,000. Officers also reportedly found $228,723 in cash, in Bahamian and US currencies and a .38 revolver with two live rounds of ammunition. A 30-year-old man, who was in the apartment at the time of the bust, was taken into police custody.
