Local law enforcement agents confiscated more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana Saturday afternoon near Mile Marker 51 on Padre Island National Seashore.

The 1,228 pounds of drugs, bagged in about 50 2-foot by 2-foot bundles about 50 miles south of Bob Hall Pier, easily were seen by a Customs and Border Patrol aircraft on routine patrol, said Corpus Christi Police Chief Bryan Smith.

The drugs apparently had been dumped in the dunes with no attempt to cover the black bags in the sand, Smith said. The drugs have a street value of about $1 million.

"It happens from time to time. We try to catch drugs coming in that way," Smith said. "Usually we don't spot them from the air."

No beachgoers were in the area. The drugs will be stored as evidence while the department seeks out how they arrived on the beach.

"It's amazing they'd have a million dollars in drugs and not take the time to bury it," Smith said, adding that anyone could have found the drugs. "We'll take advantage of their laziness any day."
