Because he grew outdoors and Alaska's daylight changes differently than ours. Maybe they got impatient LOL anyways I think it's an inch from the top where the soil is best to be. When you fill the bucket you press gently but firmly to pack in the soil because it will diminish like that through watering. Still looks good and I am sure the bud was good too.
