One of the problems, IMHO, with traditional CFLs is that they project some portion of their illumination inwards instead of outwards due to the fact that their light doesn't come from a point source but rather from a folded tube (or several of them). Spiral CFLs would seem to be better than the ones with straight tubes, but it still suffers. And I'd always thought that the higher-wattage CFLs were always of the straight-tube variety - until, that is, I got a look at one of these monsters from our sponsor, Envirotech. I believe this one is a 105-watt version - pretty high wattage for a CFL, but still using a common household-sized socket instead of a mogul one.
