This go-round I was advised to let it soak in a solution of water with a small amount of bleach added - then I rinsed the ever loving crap out of it with hot water for like 90 minutes.

What was your procedure last time? Can they go in the oven at above 212 deg F ? Boiling point of H2O is 212 deg F (at sea level). That would kill bacteria within a short time, assuming thorough they were heated all the way through. Maybe 250 deg F?

Last time the hydroton was new; all I did then was rinse it. I heard boiling hydroton stinks really bad, and not sure I want to bake it - though I suppose next time I could.

Call hydroponics shop or ask mfg'r where you bought them if they can be heat treated to make them sterile. If you can, you could put them on cookie sheets, set the oven to 250 deg F, bake them an hour (maybe less) and they should be free of bad biologicals (fungi, bacteria, molds, etc.). That is if the clay balls can take that temp without cracking or powdering.
