Tips for successful cloning

My Cloning process

Took a couple of photos while I was cloning today, and thought I'd share. As I've mentioned in the past, I use "Rapid Rooters" (Root Riot plugs are very similar and work too) to clone. In addition, I soak the Rapid Rooters in Clonex prior to using. I use RootTech hormone gel to coat the cut on the stem, as well as the node above the cut.

Okay, prior to doing this, I get all this out:

  • Scissors (for taking cuttings from plant - important that it's sterile, use alcohol)
  • Razor Knife (for make 45 degree cut on stem, again, make sure it's sterile)
  • Rooting gel (for coating the 45 degree cut and node above it)
  • Plastic cutting board (clean/sterile)
  • Small container for rooting gel (don't dip into the container - keep it sterile)
  • Clonex (for presoaking rapid rooters - I also use it to re-wet them while waiting for them to root)

Here's my process:

First, I soak them in a Clonex solution, at 5ml per liter (lightest recommendation on the bottle). For water, I use bottled spring water (think drinking water). Normally, I let them soak for 12-24 hours in this solution.

Supplies (Clockwise L to R: Scissors/knife box, Roottech Gel, Shotglass for gel, soaking rooters, plastic cutting board, small clean spoon for scooping out rooting gel into shotglass)

Then I give them a gentle squeeze, and a little shake as they should be wet/moist, but not thoroughly soaking wet. I use the non-writing end of a ball point pen to hold open the hole in the Rapid Rooter while I take my cutting.

When I take the cutting, I quickly trim off the excess leaves, leaving only a couple of trimmed leaves on top. Then, I place the cutting on a plastic cutting board and I make a 45 degree cut right below a node. I immediately dip the cutting in my rooting gel. Sometimes I scrape the stem, but honestly it works fine without it. I use RootTech Gel, but I'm sure many others would work, too. Then, I remove the pen from the hole in the rooter, and insert my cutting into the rooter.

TIP: I like to keep the humidity dome on while I take other cuttings, as sometimes they start to wilt before I'm finished. Even though they'll pop back up for me eventually, I like trying to keep them from wilting in the first place. I keep the humidity dome lid misted at all times in the cloning process (until they start to root).

TIP: If my cutting is "loose" in the rooter plug, I use a tweezers to remove a piece of rooter from an extra rooter (I like to have an extra for these purposes). I take this chunk of material, and gently stuff it into the hole with the cutting to "firm up" the cutting in the rooter. Cuttings should be steady/firmly in place and not loose in the rapid rooters.

TIP: Sometimes I leave too much leaf material and they just can't hold themselves up. In these cases, I trim the leaves more (after the fact), and so far it's almost always helped.

What is the cutting board for? I would get rid of the scissors too. And to be sterile you need to add 100 single edge razor blades from a paint store (20 bucks)and 100 pairs of 5.5 ph gloves (20 bucks) from the grow store. I use a heat pad too because I put clone boxes all over the place and want it humid and just in case the roots forget which way to go. I know you might have reasons why you clone in a grow tent but when the lights are on, the bugs are coming. My shit is sterile, hepa air vented and I still get nervous if i havent bleached my room down in 9 weeks. Anyway, long live growers.

I use the cutting board just to lay the clone down on to make a sterile cut. I do use sterilized razor blade for the angled cut. The scissors is just for removing the cutting from the plant, but they're sharp and kept sterile, too. I agree that it's important to keep sterile. You can get more sterile than I do (I don't use gloves but I do make sure my hands are clean).

I don't clone in a tent? I clone in a humidity dome, under 24/0 lighting schedule with two single T5's. Even when I had a bug problem, though, I never ended up with bugs in the dome (probably just lucky).

I used to keep a heatmat underneath my clones, but it was a bit hot directly under - so I put a little riser between them, and it worked great. Still got the radiating heat, but not too intense. Good point, though. I don't use it anymore, because I have a light fixture below my clones, and there is a small amount of radiant heat that escapes up and below the clones. In my opinion, it doesn't take much - but yes, a little heat under the clones is good.

I know people who cut them off with scissors, throw it in a glass of water, and wait for roots - now that's SIMPLE! Believe it or not, it can be that simple and still work.

Thanks so much for dropping by and commenting - and good points on sterility and heat mats. Things I really didn't emphasize enough. :thanks:

Nice pictorial proper m8. Will Clones really root in water?? As my past experience with them is that when RW or Vermiculite is wet, And the clones get too wet and start rotting but need a less powerful light and not HPS600 my main light. Worth a try tho lol.

Yes, they definitely will. I've not tried it, but I think it's just a matter of replacing the water frequently with fresh clean water. I know "Sqwheels" (a grower here) has cloned some this way (glass of water), and I've heard of several others doing this successfully, too. You should check out Sqwheels's journals or send her a message if you have questions or want to try it - I'm sure she'd be happy to help if she can.

I used to watch my mother do this with houseplants, but like I said, I've not done it myself. Stagnant water with no oxygen will kill them, but fresh cool water should keep them alive and healthy for quite a while. Some strains are much easier to clone, too, and others can be rather tricky, so the glass of water cloning trick might not work very efficiently on more difficult cloning strains.

It doesn't take much light at all. I clone under a pair of "single" T5 bulbs, and it's only half under the lights. So, not much light intensity at all when I clone.

Thanks for checking out the post and the feedback! :)

I got to agree with a few people that stated the light is a deterrent. I found that the darkness encourages the roots faster (like seeds need NO light), but as the cuttings need to be seeking light too, I run my lights for 16h ON which is about 2 hours longer than anywhere in nature.
The cutting of the tip of the leaflets isn't just a weight reducer. There are growth auxins that multiply and speed up when the tips are cut off. Some hormone is released that doubles the rooting power, or so I've read. Personally, I haven't seen a big difference between cut tips or not, but do it anyway. I typically get roots within 7 (very lucky) to 10 days (more typical) but is also strain dependent.
Very nice narrative. I cannot stress the importance of the difference between "wet" and "moist" for successful rooting. I keep the dome misted 24/7 but also take it off for about 1/2 to 1 hour every day for fresh air. Also, a liter bottle CO2 generator will speed them up as the cuttings are taking everything that they can from the leaves until roots establish.
Thanks for the time you spent making this journal.
