Why I continue to live here

There's no doubt, New Orleans has SOOOOO many issues. Crime, corruption, violence.... the list seems endless.

Every now and then, something happens to remind me why I fell in love with this city. This morning was one of those times.

The house next to mine is being stripped and ripped. One of the folk working on the house has a couple of dogs that he occasionally brings to work with him. This morning, I was woken by the dulcet tones of him playing his harmonica and the dogs "singing' along. How fucking cool is that?!?!?! What other city in the nation can you find such "personality" and "local flavor". Sure... it's a cesspool, but it's a very cool cesspool.

How's life treatin u out there? Its seems like forever since Katrina and the rest of the world moved on, but that kinda devastation takes time to repair (cosmetically). Its kinda cool to see how the human spirit can be paralleled to our herb. Hardy, rugged, beautiful, persevering, and can thrive in most conditions. Its a blessing to have the little things.

Well BWC, in functional aspects, the city is recovering... slowly but surely.

On a personal level, it hurts a little.

Every gutted house I see... it hurts a little.
The massive piles of debris here and there from the gutting and rebuilding... it hurts a little.
The water lines still visible on many of the houses in my neighborhood... it hurts a little.
The corruption cases arising out of the various assistance programs... it hurts a little.
The flight of talented and educated human beings to other more functional cities... it hurts a little.
The various advertisements for house gutting and clearing... it hurts a little.
The feeling we all have when there's a storm anywhere near... it hurts a little.
Purchasing a generator just to have simple services for a week or two after a storm blows thru... it hurts a little.

You get the idea... it's really the every day reminders that drag on you.

We look at the recovery as an amazing thing, but really, I have to ask, should we be rebuilding a city that can't withstand a storm and will likely be the site of another major catastrophe in the near future? Would you build in a flood plain? I realize this is not a popular idea, especially around this neck of the woods, but how many times will the city need to rebuild before we humans get the idea that Mother Nature ultimately holds all the cards? How many times can we expect the American taxpayers to dump billions our direction? Hard questions… perhaps harder answers.

Ok... enough venting. Thanks for giving me the opportunity.

Cheers!

Ive always wanted to take a trip to New Orleans, I got hooked on the idea when I was younger from reading too many Poppy Z. Bright books. :) Sounds like a really alive place, and your story is pretty cool.

Ahh... yet another reminder why I live here.
This weekend is Southern Decadence, our local Gay yearly event. Don't get me wrong, I don't swing that way... but the sights to be seen are amazing. New Orleanians do know how to costume up, suspend reality, and have a good time. The most interesting things happen when you mix thousands of gay flamers with barrels of alchohol. No doubt it will be an interesting weekend in the Quarter.

Cheers
