I spent several months researching growing. I finally decided to pick up a commercial grow box and some seeds and see how it went for me. I am going to try and keep an accurate record of this grow and some of my others to use as a reference guide for myself and anyone else who may wonder what it is like experiencing a first grow.
I do not know anyone personally who grows so my only source of information is what I am able to find on the internet and in books. I will try to cite any good info I find so you know I am not just pulling my info out of thin air. No gauntness what I find on the internet is going to actually pan out as valuable or accurate but I am taking my chances.
I ordered a Yielder Maxx from Yielder Max Hydro Grow Box. This is a bit of an investment for me as I don't readily have that kind of cash laying around often. I e-mailed several companies about their products and CabinetGrow seemed the most competent and helpful so I decided to spend a little more on what I thought would be a better product. They even sent me a discount code which was pretty cool. After placing the order it took all of 4 weeks for the set up to arrive and it was a long wait.
The bulb came first shipped separate from everything else. The bulb was broken when I got it. I immediately called the company and they said they were mailing a replacement. After a week I am still waiting for the replacement. The box came in a semi truck strapped to a pallet. The shipping company called the day before to set up a delivery time. I was glad to have a room mate home because this thing is pretty large and heavy. I don't know that I could have gotten it inside by myself. With some help we get it inside check it for damages and sign for the shipment.
The cabinet is of very nice construction. It seems very sturdy and the entire inside is lined with a reflective insulation. I very easily followed along with the instructions and inspected everything and made sure it was all in it's proper place. I haven't had the opportunity to use all of the components but I will review them as I use them.
I purchased seeds from Herbie's Headshop. The seeds came in just under two weeks. They were shipped very discretely. I wet some paper towels folded them a few times and started 4 seeds. Below is my count of seeds used and a brief description of each seed during the first week.
1 x Bio diesel
2x Royal Queen Critical
2x Royal Queen Fruit Spirit
1x Royal Queen Power Flower
1x Royal Queen Northern Lights
RQ-Critical sprouted very quickly. I damaged the seedling when I first tried to transplant it and it died. I have started a second one and it is almost ready to be transplanted.
Bio D was the second to sprout and is currently the plant doing the best. I had a nice transplant and it seems to be doing well in the seed cube
RQ-Power Flower this seed did not do well. It did not sprout at all. The seed swelled up with water but it did not break open. I am assuming it's not going to make it so I replaced it with 1xNorthern Lights seed which is probably a day or two from transplant.
RQ-Fruit spirit the first seed sprouted about 1/8" and did not go any farther. After a week I have set it aside with the RQ-Power Flower seed and started a second Fruit Spirit seed. I thought maybe it might need a warmer setting for the seed to take so I placed it in my car out of the sun for an afternoon. After just over 24 hours it has already sprouted more then the first seed. It is currently sitting on top of my computer tower to try and keep it warm while it sprouts.
I think my first grow is off to a good start. I did have some trouble with the lock/latch on the cabinet. The screw holding the thing together had come loose and it was not working properly. After some adjusting and tightening I was able to get it to function again but I wonder if it will keep coming undone.
I picked up a small squirt bottle for watering my babies and a couple buckets for mixing nutrients. I have only been using filtered water for the plants so far. No nutrients yet. I am trying to hold out until I have 4 good sprouts before transferring them over to the first hydro set up.
