Supporters of a medical marijuana initiative in Arkansas have submitted some 74,000 additional signatures to the secretary of state’s office, after submitting more than 65,000+ signatures last month. To get on the ballot, the measure needs 62,507 verified signatures. Out of last month’s total, about 36,000 were verified, which means supporters only need about 26,000 to be valid out of the new batch submitted Monday.

The group Arkansans for Compassionate Care are behind the medical marijuana ballot initiative.

The group’s treasurer, Melissa Fults, said organizers learned more about the process after submitting its first batch of signatures. This time, she said, they made sure that volunteers and paid canvassers asked people when and where they last voted before asking them to sign the petition to help ensure the signees were registered voters.

“I don’t think there’s much of a chance we won’t” make the Nov. 6 ballot, Fults said.

The secretary of state’s office must verify the signatures and is expected to rule within 10 days on whether the proposal qualifies for the ballot.

The fact that supporters seem to have many more signatures than needed has to bode well for the measure’s chance of success this fall, as long as those on the ground in AR get the vote out.

Every state that attempts to give medical marijuana patients legal protections raises awareness of the issue. Even if supporters in Arkansas fail this fall, they have laid the groundwork for success in the near future.
