As fuel gets scarce the government is going to have to come up with some way fighting the war on drugs in a more efficient manner or give up and let people grow what they want to grow. There is going to be more and more pressure, legal challenges and large gatherings like the 420 gatherings where so many people are going to smoke up in front of the cops that the law will have to cave in. How much money does it cost to send a drug enforcement officer up in a helicopter to look for pot? As money and fuel gets tighter, more politicians will pay attention to the public they serve and pass laws to repeal prohibition. One problem is in the states they set up a system to tax hemp and then refused to hand out the tax stamps, thus making it illegal. When will they just turn around and start handing out the tax stamps? Everyone knows that industrial hemp is something that is not a drug. The drug enforcement people do not have a different word for hemp versus marijuana. The simple thing would be to put it in a new class and give it a separate name. How long are we going to have to put up with this nonsense?
Watching what is going on in Nimbin shows that governments/police are willing to go to many lengths, but they do not want to do it on camera. The internet and camera's in every phone, plus small hidden cameras will show them for who they are, thugs! They are making all police into miltary forces. It is not just in the United(Devided) States doing this, it is happening all over. Soon it will be a world wide Us vs Them, the Them being police and military units. Even the politicians are one of Us. The military and police are forced to draw from Us raw recruits. I want to see the long view of this.
This is how I see it going down. The legal challenges in Canada will eventually go through. There will be a defacto decrim in effect. The farmers will gang up on Washington and force them to allow them to grow HEMP. The second that happens, you know thousands of plots of marijuana will spring up. With the pot laws falling here the US citizens will be coming up here to enjoy "Pot Holidays". I like the idea that some advocates have and that is to just sow so much seed that the cops can't ever get rid of it all. Push it up a notch. It will force them to waste their time and energy(effort and fuel!) chasing ghosts.
When money becomes useless as a medium of exchange, hemp may be one of those crops that will be what the new money will be based on. Getting back to the idea that higher fuel costs will be one of many reasons why marijuana and industrial hemp will be unenforceable if not out right legalized, we need this crop for fuel. We also need it for food and all the other reasons to grow it, but fuel will be straw that broke the camels back. Many people in the US are angry that the States are in a war over oil and we need to educate these people that the soldiers that have died, did so without any good reason. The other reason for the war is to test new equipment and make a ton of money for the big corporations that feed the military-industrial complex. I would hate to have to be the person who goes up to the family of a dead soldier and tell them that their sacrifice was for nothing and only happened to make more money for already bloated companies.
We are going to have to come to terms with less oil and less of everything else. A little Hemp can go a long way to help. The second the States does go back to growing this crop that will send a message to the rest of the world that some sanity has returned to the region. Being able to take a hit to ease your pain will mean that the big drug companies will lose so much money that many will be reduced to real science and real cures in order to compete.
The War on Drugs has an idiot for it's general. He would rather a person die than allow them medical marijuana. He mistakenly thinks that the federal laws superceed State law. The Drug Csar thinks that he is protecting people from what he thinks is bad laws.
Lawsuits are coming up time and time again because th government has proof that medical marijuana does work and has been supplying a small group since the 70's. They will not allow any testing done on them, even though they are willing, yet in the same breath says no proper studies have been done!
Groups and individuals doing the sueing for medical marijuana have an iron clad claim that they are being discriminated against.
One recent blow is the fact that one medical user actually sued to get his pot back and won. The case went all the way to the supreme court in that state. They said that the local cops helping the feds do not have the right to follow federal law over state law. As far as I have read, right in the constitution is says State law superceeds federal law. That may be a simplistic take on it, but that is what I have read. I am not American, I am Canadian so lets take a look at the quadmire of our own laws. The illegality of pot is based on a policy statement written by a civil servant. Our courts made the issue one of a constitutional matter and had given the government of the day one year to amend the constitution or he would rule in favour of the charged individual. The Government did not amend the constitution but did send out this policy statement, which did not satisfy the judge. So as things stand, there is a wedge in the loophole keeping it open. There is a huge grey area that needs to be clarified.
We have a battle in the government right now after an illegal election was called and the party in power did not get the majority it was betting on. The Prime minister knew he was going to be defeated in a non-confidence vote and a coalition of the other partys would be free to form the government. The PM went to the Govenor General to suspend parliment till a budget could be drawn up, to forstall the non-confidence vote. That is where we stand right now.
