I slowly healed and got better. For a while I just stayed in the break room watching folks and playing cards. It was never dull. I was playing cards one day (actually more than one day) and the lady next to me had water dripping out of her ear. I told her and she took off for a few minutes and came back dry. She explained she had water on her brain and it dripped out of her ear. OK! Oh,no!
There were many women in there getting cosmetic surgery done. I could understand Breast Reductions and things like that. That’s got to be really uncomfortable. It was the tummy tucks and things like that, that was upsetting me. Why would the Military pay for things like that? I could not understand the pain they would go through. Why not just lose the weight?
Finally the day came that I was considered well/cured and would wait for the retirement board to decide what kind of retirement I would get. They moved me into a house that was close to the Hospital, but not part of the Hospital. I had a room with a bed, a chair, a table, and a shared bath. It became home to me, I was there for a long time, over 6 months. I bought myself a beat up tv. I had entertainment. Since we didn’t know how long I would be there Jo stopped driving down to see me.
Washington has a great rapid transit system. Parts were above ground and parts were below ground. I became a regular at the Zoo. They had really Great Zoo. I visited all sights of Washington.. Then I started picking random places to get off the transport system. Some scared hell out of me.
Finally I met with the Retirement Board and they gave me a 5 Year Temporary retirement. I honestly thought to myself “A Temporary Retirement! Do they think I’m going grow a new butt?”. Then I realized that most cancer patients don’t survive 5 years.
I fooled hell out of them! The end.
Note this took 4 years to write. I hope you’ve enjoyed it. Just one life among many.
