The Story Continues…………….Italy
When I was deported from Greece, my Commanding Officer handed me some travel orders, I was so tripped out I didn’t read them. As we got closer to Italy, I thought that I should read them…..they were not what I expected at all. I had travel money and 7 days to get to my next duty station. I was free! No guards .and no chaperon . Yes Indeed!
We had landed at Aviano AFB in northern Italy.. There was only one person in the terminal. I asked for a taxi….there wasn’t any. I asked about a Bus. There were none.
Then I ask if there was a train station. Yes there was one, if I walked a mile that way.
I started walking.
As I walked, I past vineyards and farms, if there was some one working in the fields they would wave at me. I thought to myself…I’m going to like it here. Little did I know how much I was going to like it there.
Finally I found the train station. It only took me second to know where I was headed Venice. Like all European Trains it was nice. It only took about 35 minutes to get there.
The Train station was big! I walked out and a guy bumped into me as said HASH!
OH! Yeah! I bought what I thought I would smoke before I had to check in.
I spent the next 6 days there. I went to St John’s Square and just stood there…it was magnificent. I would spend a great deal of time there. I met quite a few vacationing Americans, some time we would have dinner together, One family insisted that I go with them on a gondola ride through the city. By the way it is really easy to the see Americans in Europe. We stand out, believe me. .
It was great just watching everything go by in Venice. The whole city just looked like one post card after another.
Well it was time to make the 40 minute train ride to Vicenza. It’s pronounced “Ven chin za”.
On to face a Court Marshal I went.
