When I open the tent I can smell a plant like odor but nothing like I expected (yet), I'm looking forward to them moving forward far enough to smell like weed!
I think you will be surprised at the smells from here on out. They are very different from what you probably associate with weed. The smell compounds are called terpenes and they can change the high you experience. The most common terpene is Beta-myrcene. Beta myrcene has a clove like smell and is commonly what we associate with the smell of cannabis. For some strains it makes up half of the terpenes. It is also found in mangoes and hops. Really hoppy beers have that characteristic myrcene smell. Beta myrcene is an analgesic (pain med) and an anti inflammatory. It also helps even out blood sugar (anti-diabetic). It has effects that inhibit DNA mutations so is good for preventing cancer. Beta-myrcene also changes the permeability of membranes in the body and allows more cannabinoids to get into the brain. If you eat a mango 45 minutes before using cannabis the effects will be greater! So more of us should keep mangoes or mango juice around when running low on Meds!
Another common terpene is alpha-pinene. It is what gives pine needles their smell. It's main effect is being a bronchodilator. This makes sense when you think about pine trees. The first thing we do when in a pine forest is to breathe deeply and smell the pine trees. This opens our lungs and helps us breathe easier. Pinene is also anti inflammatory and analgesic. It also has the ability to boost memory.
Next on our list is limonene. Limonene is found in high concentrations in citrus fruits, especially in their skin. Limonene has anti depressive activity. Who can be sad in a house that smells like lemons? It is also an anti inflammatory. It helps prevent the growth of tumors. It also helps with anxiety. It has antibacterial functions and also is used as an antifungal.
Next on the list is linalool. It is the main component in the lavender plant. It is also anxiolytic (reduces anxiety). It is an anti depressant. It has sedative qualities and can help with sleep. It is an analgesic as well.
The last one I will discuss today is Beta-caryophellene. This is a terpene found in high qualities in black pepper. It has anxiolytic properties so I keep black pepper on hand when I am smoking. It prevents me from getting too anxious and I have not had cannabis induced anxiety since I started smelling it at the onset of anxious symptoms. Beta caryophellene is also an anti inflammatory, antioxidant, anti depressive, analgesic, and helps prevent the growth of tumors. It is a very powerful terpene and its presence in black pepper makes it easily available even without cannabis.
There are many more but this is a good introduction!
